Melissa: So I hear youre about to begin your 41st season as head coach of the Tar Heels in the fall. We follow the philosophy that steel sharpens steel. A part of being able to lead anyone, especially now is to win their trust. And obviously our history is so good at projecting this they have to make a change if they want to get there. Back in my day, we were accountable for our grades and our parents held us responsible for our performance. And so what this motivates all of them to do is to compete. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. But through this love, love of family, love of neighborhood, love of community, love of the people that work for you and the people you serve, the customers, because hes also a free enterprise, this unbelievable man, Arthur Blank is. But if this persons going to be toxic to your culture and is going to be so incredibly selfish, thats not the person to hire. You criticized me here. You care about them. So theyre not allowed to touch coachability. She was so frustrated with her professional coach. One of the most destructive things in athletics are the whiners. If you want to coach or lead in any environment. The coach hates me. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. Its what business can do for America. The Tar Heels' record under Dorrance stood at 809-67-36 (.887 winning percentage) over 33 seasons at the end of the 2017 season. He assembles all of us in a room, all of the Ph.D. candidates and masters candidates and says, Okay, I want all of you people to memorize reams of Russian poetry and Russian literature. And now these students are looking at each other and they cant believe it. Because I rode this kid, I knew what her potential was and if she has this extraordinary potential now, Anson Im the best on the team at this, and youre not happy. Thank you. Their numbers are critical of them. So this is where were trying to drive them. Can business save America in a very positive sense? So what we did is we took our 12 core values and we assigned a motivational quote attached to each one, and we ask every one of our players to memorize all of these motivational quotes attached to each core value. In fact the Lady Tar Heels have won 22 of the 36 NCAA soccer championships. I took this right into my coaching profession. And I was thinking, this is incredible. And now they know, and certainly in these other environments they had the same struggle. Lets go back and tell him that hes crazy. Melissa: Hi. And I think companies and managers are trying to figure out how to identify the right data at the right time and present it in the right ways. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. Im looking forward to it myself. Melissa: I did look at your core values before this, and I was impressed, and I also thought they were extremely comprehensive. I have the perspective that the best managers arent just leaders, but theyre coaches, which I think is true. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. And we would give speeches and then Jack Welch, the famous CEO of General Electric, would get up there on a stage and sit in a comfortable chair like Im doing now. Anson: Well, Im one of these guys that, you know, loves to read. Were not going to memorize poetry. So in your case, you know, someone with an incredible high IQ or some Harvard graduate that finished, you know, summa cum laude. And for us to see whats working all we have to do is to go to our test. To paraphrase Alex Ferguson of Man United fame, We want to take responsibility for our own action, our own errors, our own performance level, and eventually for every result.. Because as long as every kid I coach has an excuse for why they dont start or play or travel, they will never be able to change their place. And so Im thinking, well, Im going to correct that this year. He has won 22 National Championships and is the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. And now all of a sudden theres this circular narrative built with the player that now the players feeding off of. [Laughs.]. If you guys learn one thing from me today, make sure your HR person has incredible insights into hiring the right people because your HR person is going to determine whether or not your company is going to be successful or not. But there is a line, and if their average is under a 3.0 in that line and youre on scholarship, we try to get that girl to transfer, and if shes not on scholarship we try to get her to quit the team. And so there are two advantages to me, competing in a training environment. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. They include responsiveness, reliability, and a non-partisan and non-advocacy approach to our work. Every now and again Ill work with these different groups that are sorting out a way to test character, and theres some group Im working with, but right now I cant remember them, although I am doing some work with Angela Duckworth on performance. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. Or if you have a collection of small societies with the six people youre leading and your restaurant group its cookie cutter where yeah, we all do this. How do you win their trust? And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. You are definitely an inspiration. And this is what I tell all of my kids. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right. Because obviously almost every kid we recruit on scholarship has the dream of playing professionally, so almost every one of our scholarship kids does sign a professional contract. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen.
