Latakia is out front with maybe a hint of vanilla hidden way , way, way in the background. I was actually searching for this kind of tobacco for a long time. Presentation: A hearty, dark dense block. I don't like the cut of this tobacco ( Krumble kake, broken rubbed out flake). I've had english blends once or twice for fun but don't really like them. As the description above notes, ? The good point is the concentration on Latakia, with no corrections, and this is also a weak point, since it flattens the experience. The taste on the palate apparently does not translate as far as room aroma; my wife does not much care for the aroma but she does not complain, bless her heart. Pirate kake is by far the smokiest, most contemplative Latakia blend out there - it tastes great and is perfect for sitting in the cool night air and taking time off from the world. This is a dark black brick which crumbles into wonderful flakes very easily and is able to be sprinked and packed nicely - a few lighter colored flakes are evident in the crumbling. Sometimes, I like that, though I smoke Virginias most often. I am sensing no vitamin N, and I am smoking this bowl very aggressively. Keeps away loiterers and unwanted company. It gets one dimensional thru the bowl, in that Latakia dominates the experience and ultimately numbs the senses too much. It deploys a large palette of all distinct aromas you find within the wheelhouses of Latakia and Orientals. In the smoke the Latakia - even though being 75% percent of the blend - really smooth and silky. It is a strong smoke but pleasant to the pallet. A lot has already been said about it and everything that was said in favor of it is true. It brings back good memories. Yes, this blend deserves that much respect. The room note though, will send some running for the door. Not a rush but a steady buzz- nice in this dept. Just rip off a hunk, rub it out and smoke yourself to contentment. Tin had almost exactly 3 years of age on it and yielded a latakia smoke that had all of the finer points of smoothness, mellow, consistent in flavor and no rough spots. If you are completely enamored with Latakia, you cannot go wrong with Pirate Kake. Ex cigar smokers might enjoy this more than not. It was very smoky yet smooth (smelled a bit like a camp fire). The flavor and aroma don't have that intoxicating factor that blends like Nightcap or Constellation have. With a remarkable production of creamy smoke, an scandalous room prescence, and an ever-present, in-your-face overdose of Latakia, this blend is too much good stuff. The krumble kake is easy to worth with, the moisture level is great, lights and stays lit well, the mouthfeel is creamy and thick, the flavor (if you're into lat-bombs) is top-notch. What keeps this from being a total lat-bomb is the dry, mildly buttery sweet, woody, earthy, herbal, moderately spicy and floral, sour Turkish, which is noticeable in every puff. This is my new all day smoke . Firstly, this tobacco is a Lat Bomb and definitely only for latakia afficionados. It has a similar effect of a good Sichuan pepper, a bit of a tingling sensation on the palate. I find that by the time I get to the last 1/3 of the bowl, I'm on overload. Fear not the 75% lati for it is your friend. . As others have mentioned, Pirate Kake would probably blend very well with FVF, or other sweet, full bodied, predominately English or Virginia blends. Again absolutely nothing wrong with this stuff I just think there are much better options especially within the same company for Latakia heavy blends. This was a blend I have been searching for because I love latakia but it is such a mild to medium and just tends to be low on the nicotine level sadly. That said though, I quite like it! This is a awesome smoke , very smokey , campfire comes to mind , there is some sweetness, but not as much as other English tobaccos, even so this is a great smoking tobacco. Remember to use a pipe reserved for Latakia blends, too. I assume because it is in a crumble kake that the moisture content can initially be high, so maybe dry it a little before smoking to avoid steam/tongue bite. These kind of flavours, borne of latakia singly. It lites well and stays lit right down to the end of the bowl. What I find Surprising straight away is that having imagined this a heavy smoke, it is quite the opposite. I suppose that there are people out there for whom there can never be too much Latakia or Perique or Basma, or whatever other condiment we can name. By mid bowl I thought I was smoking granulated road tar ? At other times, you may also detect an almost perfumy fragrance, possibly a synaesthetic hallucination. I am a Latakia lover. But i mixed about 60% of this w 40% of comoys #4 and majic happened. 56g tin. Also pairs nicely with Lagavulin, and a novel about tall ships. of exceptional latakia accompanied by Turkish and burley, Pirate Cake by Cornell & Diehl is a latakia lover's treasure. This is probablly one of the smoothest blends despite it's overall strength there is. The "Ham Bone" aspect disappeared. I just pull it apart, load and light. I prefer to not rub this one out or it will burn too fast on you. It is true to its word, but C&D could tinker the blend and do better. It seems to mellow the Latakia a bit, taking the edge off slightly and making it a little creamier. The flavors actually varied through out the bowl ranging from smokey to earthy and very lightly sweet. I knew by the guy who I traded tins with ( He got an old tin from me of Kingfisher ) that it was a full bore Latakia blend, I have to say I am most pleased. Right next to SPC Mississippi River and Plum Pudding. Similar Blends: I agree with reviewer Pipestud 2004-08-29 that CAO's Old Ironsides is possible; only even more Latakia dense. Bought this and smoked it right away from the tin. Crumbles up real nice. The nicotine will not knock you out but it is there and persistent. Please keep it coming. The tin I bought had perfect moisture and didn't need to let it sit out prior to loading up a bowl. update July 2014** I decided to change the blend type of this tobacco to other primarily because I don't believe it is an English blend due to its high amount of Latakia. On the tongue this tobacco is sweet and fresh. Wow, this stuff is a Latakia monster. Of course it is hard to keep lit and everything, there's over 70% of Latakia in there! Arrrr -- shiver me timbers -- Pirate Kake is the second blend Ive smoked in as many days that has bewitched me into thinking there were Virginias mixed into it (apparently, based on a couple of other reviews, I wasnt the only one to be so fooled). I disagree with a lot of the reviewers that claim that this blend lacks complexity. The smell of burned wood and leather is very evident from the tin. I know I like it, but I am not sure if it will always be in my stock. As Devil's advocate, this is the best contemporary Latakia based English I've smoked barring my ancient faves: Sullivan's 00 & XX blends from 50 years ago. The next day PK lights right up and smokes all the way through. Details. The VA's may be lower in percentage, but they are first rate and their earthy sweetness are obvious. Only if we can get aromatics to taste and smell like this then we'll be cooking with gas big time or maybe i just havent came across one yet to satisfy my smoking pleasures. For three years now Ive been reading about Lat-Bombs in countless reviews, and I kept scratching my head: Ive smoked lots of blends with Latakia so what the hell is a Lat-Bomb? It joins a favorite list and while it wont be a regular part of my rotation I definitely will smoke it when I need something different in my smoking rotation. A smooth, robust blend with LOTS (75%!) If there is such a thing as heaven, for latakia lovers the streets of heaven must be paved with pirate kake. Good stuff. This blend is smooth and cool smoking all the way down the bowl and though I don't have a "sophisticated" palate, I know what I like and this is a great smoke! There is power in this kake. The only one I am confident in saying I can taste is the burley. Pipe Tobacco. This is a blend I've since left behind but of which I have fond memories. No pretense is made about subtle reflections but instead, a robust presentation of flavors that complement one another well. Still great within its genre.however, and a big however it is, it tends to get overwhelming and is almost too much of a great thing. Followed by a couple hours later and you can still taste it in your mouth just as strong as if you just took a bite, and you want that flavor out of your mouth by any means necessary.. but the horror sets in when you discover that no amount of alcohol, oral hygiene products, or other means can help you. But this one is just waaaaayyy to much Latakia for me. Probably would go nice with a good, single malt Scotch. Details. Also, this is a big pipe blend, we're talking Group 6 and beyond. Earthy, smoky, salty, leathery and full. I had smoked samples from friends and a small tin of this in the past but waited to review until I could get a pound to start on just to see consistency from tin to bulk. On the other side of the coin; how can you suggest balance as a blender with a 70% +lat bomb? Pairs great with a nicely aged tawny port, or a Macallan Cask Strength.
